Rip Curl Pro Peniche, Portugal 2013

Hi once again! As you may probably know, the Rip Curl Pro Peniche 2013 is about to start at Supertubos beach in Portugal, near my hometown, Praia da Areia Branca.

Currently, Mick Fanning, after a big win in France, is the principal contender for the ASP World Championship Title. Being the 9th out of 10 events in the ASP World Championship Tour, the perfect waves of the Sand Break Supertubos are extremely important to decide who will take the crown as the next World Champion.

The 2013 ASP World Title is down to five surfers: Mick Fanning, Kelly Slater, Jordy Smith, Joel Parkinson and Taj Burrow, but only the 2-times World Champion Mick Fanning can be crown at Supertubos. The winning possibilities (taken from the ASP website) are as follows:

If Fanning wins the event:
- Slater will need a 3rd or better to take the title decision to Hawaii.
- Smith, Burrow and Parkinson will be out of the race.
If Fanning finishes Runner-Up in Portugal:
- Slater will need a 9th or better to take the title decision to Hawaii.
- Smith will need to win the event to take the title decision to Hawaii.
- Burrow and Parkinson will be out of the race.
If Fanning finishes 3rd in Portugal:
- Slater will need a 9th or better to take the title decision to Hawaii
- Smith, Burrow and Parkinson will need to win the event to take the title decision to Hawaii.
If Fanning finishes 5th or worse in Portugal:
- The ASP World Title decision will go to Hawaii as, even with a 25th in Portugal, Slater can still win in Hawaii.
Julian Wilson won the 2012 edition of the Rip Curl Pro Peniche, in a somehow polemic final heat against the Brazilian Gabriel Medina. Check out the 2012 Final Day Highlights at Supertubos:

So, don't miss any moment of this great event in one of the best Sand Breaks of the world!!

Sorry for not posting for the last 3 weeks but I was in a trainee program for my first job at Novabase, Portugal. An awesome program with the main goal to train recent graduates in Team Building, check out THIS crazy Lip Dub (Ylvis - The Fox) we did during our two weeks in Vimeiro, Portugal.

Frankie Chavez, the Portuguese "One Man Band"

Hello, last Tuesday I present to you two Portuguese bands, "Capitão Fausto" and "Salto, both singing in Portuguese. Today I want to share with you a more international Portuguese Artist, Frankie Chavez.

Frankie Chavez plays beautifully Blues/Folk music in a style "One Man Band", just like the well known Xavier Rudd. His style is unique among the Portuguese music as he mixes different guitars, tunnings, pedals and drums. His style is truly amazing as he also play Portuguese Guitar, used in Fado (Portuguese music genre). Thus, combining with Blues music, create a wonderful musical experience.

Frankie Chavez has also a close connection to Surf. He created the Official Song for the Rip Curl Pro Search Peniche 2009. This was the first time that the ASP World Championship event was at Supertubos, Peniche, Portugal. The Rip Curl Pro Search was an event that was in a different location every year. The organization and the professional surfers of the ASP enjoyed so much the event that they decided to move it permanently to SuperTubos. Let me show you that amazing music, entitled "The Search":

In his music, Frankie Chavez also uses Slide Guitar and Lap Steel. Come one!, the man uses a thousand musical instruments, his songs are just awesome!

Do you know the biggest wave ever surfed? At 2011, Frankie Chavez composed and co-produced the soundtrack for the documentary "The North Canyon Show", showing the Hawaiian Garret Mcnamara surfing the HUGE waves of Nazaré, Portugal.

Let me show you another two songs of Frankie Chavez. Notice the complex and beautiful melody of his songs. The second is a cover of Pixies song "Hey!":

This was probably the post that I enjoyed the most to write at Surf Locus. It gives me such a great pleasure to share with you very good music, especially Portuguese music. I hope you liked it and if you did, please LIKE Surf Locus Facebook Page: www.facebook.com/surflocus. Have Fun!!

Peniche SuperTubos and Portugal's first artificial wave pool

If you like Surf, you must know the famous tubes of SuperTubos, Peniche, Portugal. Described as the European Pipeline, its home for the Rip Curl Pro Peniche (ASP World Championship Tour event) since 2009, substituting the former Billabong Pro Mundaka, in Spain.

Praia da Areia Branca and Surf

Today was a special day, as I surfed really good waves in a season that has not been so good to practice this sport. I really enjoy being with my friend Rui Sousa and catching a lot of waves ;).

So I think today's post should be about Surf, and particularly about my hometown, Praia da Areia Branca, Portugal, near Peniche, one of the best regions to Surf in Europe.

As this is not the best beach to Surf in this region, I was really impressed by the quality of waves today, and happy that I could Surf in my hometown. So I will show you some pictures of this spot ;)
